How to play

A new puzzle every day

Every day at midnight (your local time) there's a new WhereIsShe puzzle, with a day code such as she-001 · No. 001. A puzzle is five rounds, and every round shows a photo or a short video of the day's person somewhere in the world. Everyone plays the same five rounds on the same day, so your score can be compared directly with your friends'.

Photos and videos

Look closely: road signs, the language on shop fronts, the architecture, the plants, the coastline, the light and the weather are all clues. Videos play automatically and loop. Turn sound on or off with the speaker button in the top bar (the setting is remembered). You can zoom into a photo to read small details.

Making your guess

When you think you know where the photo was taken, open the map, zoom in and tap or click to drop your pin. You can move the pin as often as you like. When you're happy, press Guess. The game then shows the real location, a line from your pin to it, the distance in kilometres and your score for the round. Remember that the answer is where the photo was taken, never where anyone lives.

Scoring

Each round is worth up to 5,000 points, so a perfect day is 25,000. If your pin is within 30 km of the real spot you get the full 5,000 points ("Perfect!"). Beyond 30 km the score falls off smoothly with distance: roughly 4,770 points at 100 km, 3,650 at 500 km, 2,600 at 1,000 km, 950 at 2,500 km and under 200 at 5,000 km. There's no penalty for taking your time, so there's no need to rush.

Results, sharing and streaks

After round five you meet the day's person and see your total, your score for each round and how close each pin was. You can share a spoiler-free result with friends: the day code, your score and one coloured square per round (🟩 under 100 km, 🟨 under 500 km, 🟧 under 2,000 km, 🟥 further), with no locations or names. Playing on consecutive days builds your streak; your stats show games played, your average and best score, your current and best streak and a chart of your results. Everything is saved in your browser, so you can close the page in the middle of a game and continue later.

The archive

Missed a day? Open Archive in the top bar to play any past puzzle. Archive games show your score but don't change your daily streak, so you can catch up without pressure.

Feature me

Want to be the person in a future puzzle? Use Feature me at the bottom of the page. You'll need a free account with a verified email. You can send up to 10 links and up to 5 photos or videos of yourself (images or video only, up to 25 MB each), with where each one was taken. You must be the person in the photos, be 18 or older and agree to them being used. To keep things fair there's a limit of one submission a day and three waiting for review. We review every submission by hand, you approve your day before it goes live, and you can have it removed at any time. Please don't send photos taken at or near your home.
